Hydro Greenhouse 2

At the end of the Second Grade Plants unit, our students used a Hydro Greenhouse 2 to grow some basil and alfalfa sprouts.

Some students wanted information on how to get one.

Kids, ask your parents permission to order one and make sure you save up your allowance to help pay for it:

TALES - PS 244 is one of the healthiest schools in the country!

On June 12th I flew to Little Rock, Arkansas to pick up an award on behalf of our school for being one of the healthiest schools in the country.

Our school, TALES - PS 244, was founded on the belief that every student should grow healthy as well as get an excellent education.  We have movement classes at least twice a week for 45 minutes.  We have recess every day for at least 25 minutes.  We eat delicious vegetarian lunches at least once a week, thanks to the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food.  We get extra Fitness and Nutrition instruction once a week from FAN4Kids.  And, we banned soda, chocolate milk, and junk food from our school.  Chocolate milk, for those who don't know, has almost as much sugar as soda, and is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.  We're lucky that our incredible students discovered that and showed the principal.  That's just the beginning!  We also had a dance club and a running club this year.

In Little Rock I was able to meet teachers from around the country working at schools where they take health seriously as well.  There are so many schools doing wonderful things out there.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation will be sending us a banner to hang at our school to show off our award!

GothamSchools also wrote about our school receiving the award.  Click on the picture below for the article.

Congratulations to TALES - PS 244 for this wonderful recognition and to all the staff, parents, and students for their hard work!
